School daze

School is in full swing for Josh and Kiki. Josh started first grade a couple of weeks ago and is doing well in his class. We transferred him to the new neighborhood school - Summitt Elementary. His teacher, Ms. Johnson, is new to the school but she'd been teaching for a few years in south Austin. Summitt also has the Vietnamese bilingual program. He's gone from being the only Vietnamese student in his classroom to having almost half the class be Vietnamese. Josh is not in the bilingual program because he is pretty proficient in his English skills. He's made several new friends so we're happy with this move.

Kiki started her first full week of school and loves it. She was so disappointed on Saturday when we told her she didn't have Lab School. Her teacher says she spends a lot of time in their dramatic play area, which is currently set up as a kitchen. Today, Kiki said she and another child made a birthday cake. And then they played with puzzles. I got to school early today and watched the children play outside. Kiki has a habit of picking flowers for me. It's sweet but she doesn't realize that she picks flowers from other people's flower gardens, or in this case, the school flower bed.

They have also started extra-curricular activities for the semester. Josh is playing soccer again and scored a goal this weekend. Kiki is taking swim lessons and truly enjoys being in the water. Her teacher says she's bold and that will help her learn to swim quickly. Her favorite part is jumping off the diving board at the end of class.

Jacob is 8 months and is a happy child. He crawls everywhere and wants to walk already. He seems to enjoy this new schedule. As long as he's full, Jacob is happy to go along for the ride. I can't imagine how much more busy I'll be in a few years when he starts school!
